Over the last few weeks, we had some of Australia’s top cricket stars come into Suit Vault for a styling appointment for the prestigious Laurie Sawle Medal Evening. The Laurie Sawle Medal is WA cricket’s night of nights, It was held at the Crown Perth’s Crown Ballroom. With this formal occasion approaching some of Australia’s top Cricketers entrusted the team at Suit Vault to get them in the latest formal wear ensuring that they looked on-trend and dressed appropriately for this special occasion.

We had Mitch Marsh, Ashton Agar, Josh Philipe and Sam Whiteman come in for fittings and all chose a variety of formal wear looks. We are excited to break down each look they chose as they all are a different take on formal wear and looks that we have ready for you to try on for your next black-tie function.

Mitch Marsh – Black Velvet

If choosing to go down the velvet road, the cut of the jacket needs to be slim and trim. As the fabric is quite heavy and does not sit close to the body due to this it is important that the fit is spot on – to avoid a baggy look.

Velvet adds a touch of polish to the standard formal wear look without going too over the top. It is important if going velvet to keep the paired shirt, trousers and accessories very neutral – allowing the velvet to stand out. You can see here that the jacket hugs Mitch’s waist nicely and the sleeve length is perfect enough for a bit of the white to be popping out from below.

We recommend pairing your velvet jacket with a classic black bow tie and white pocket squares as you want the jacket to be the feature, not the accessories. Other fun velvet colours you could select for your next formal event are burgundy, red, blue and even green.

Ashton Agar – Midnight Blue Tuxedo

The Midnight Blue Tuxedo is an extremely elegant, style-forward look! Perfect for your next formal event where you want to be seen as the fashion-savvy guy. In a room full of black tuxedos why not stand out from the crowd in this elegant modern formal wear style. Midnight blue colour is a great colour choice for those wanting to dress the look up – with classic black shoes or dress down with some R M Williams boots for the formal occasions outside.

Ashton chose to dress it down with some black boots while selecting a black bow tie, having the black bow tie works well with the black satin lapel on the jacket – Bringing the entire look together.

Josh Philipe & Sam Whitman – Classic Black Tuxedo

A timeless classic look, the black tuxedo ticks all the boxes. The cut and style of this works well with gents who are all shapes and sizes plus the elegant look pairs well with all colours of dresses. If choosing to go this strict formal look, we recommend always pairing the black tuxedo as seen here with a black bow tie and white pocket square. You can throw in some colour with the pocket square to pair with your partner’s dress should you wish to spice up your formal wear look.

Josh & Sam both chose this look as you can see it pairs nicely with either a black dress or pink, the black tuxedo is the perfect selection if you are in doubt about what your partner is going to wear for your next formal event.
